So, here I am. For the SNCP, this will look familiar--of course, sans speeding ticket for Blair. For my PDX peeps, this is new.
It's been six years (almost exactly) since my last (and first) Crohn's flare-up, so I'm pretty lucky. But I'm still full of uncertainty about what this means long-term for me. When is solid food in my future? Oh cheesburger, I long for you!
I include this picture not to induce sympathy, but jealousy. See the tubes feeding me? That means that finally I can be lazier than my stomach. See the green thing on a stick? That's not a lollypop, but a delicious sponge! So that when my mouth gets dry, I can quench my thirst without all that bothersome swallowing. Notice the stylish mitts? It's like I'm a boxer!
This was taken yesterday, and fortunately they've graduated me from the hellish "Total Bowel Rest" to the mere torture that is "Clear liquids." I tell you, there are more food commercials on TV in the hospital. I actually DREAMED about food last night.
For those of you who may be totally confused about what's going on, here's a short description. Those of you wanting the more disgusting details can email, I guess, or call James, as my left hand is out of commission currently, and hunt-n-peck is getting tedious.
Crohn's is a glamorous disease where you immune system thinks your intestines are foreign, and subsequently attacks them. This leads to all sorts of nastiness, like hospital food. My doctors have me ingesting (through the veins or the mouth): two antibiotics, Potassioum, Saline, steroids, immunosuppressants, and immunomodulators. They're saving the mouse rDNA for later. Also, much jello.
No fruitcake, alas.

Do you get to use a bedpan? Also that sponge isn't the same one they use to...nevermind.
Get better soon danggit!
Aud,
The sponge thing looks...interesting! Dreaming of food; I do that and I don't have nearly the excuse you do :) What hospital are you in? I don't have James' phone number, so I can't ask more details. Is there anything you need besides a new immune system?? Have they given you an idea of when you will be discharged from the prison that is a hospital room??
reeeeally? i didn't know! my sister-in-law has chron's. and she's in portland too. lemme know if you ever wanna chat with her. she's had it for 15-20 years and is doing GREAT.
you know what makes her feel really great?
pregnancy!
:)
Ha ha! I'm not planning on getting pregnant anytime soon, even IF it would make me feel better. But I'm glad she's doing well.
And the only place that sponge went was in my mouth.
Oh, and I'm at Legacy Meridian Park, but I'm blowing this pop stand tonight. Woot!
I hope you're doing better! Good vibes continue, and I hope to hear a good news update soon...
Aud, I would totally get another speeding ticket if it would get rid of your Crohn's. Heck, I would do 100 in a school zone. There is no limit to the civil offenses I would commit for your health. :)
Ah the memories, speeding along 8th north to the hospital with Chachi, Dave, Alicen and that person Chachi married, wishing the cop would accept "but we're taking the sacrament to our friend in the hospital!" as an excuse. No such luck. Several years later, I am sure you wish it really was appendicitis.
Kate and I are praying for you. This trial, like all others, will pass, but we would remove it from you if we could.
Much Love,
Blair and Kate
good thing you have funny friends! :) hope things only get better.
You still actually look amazing lying sick in a hospital bed. No wonder James had three other men to compete with to get your hand in marriage. Oops, was that public knowledge?
are you REALLY this positive or just helping your friends find their best jokes...
ok, so you're home now...
I heard an Engstrom or two got a slice of fruitcake. I haven't used the word fruitcake this much in a sentence since the 70's. I hate fruitcake, but you make it sound good.
holy crappers, audrey!!! ahhh! too bad we don't live so far away from each other or we could have sicky-movie-do nothing time together! we will just have to plan on getting together (Serious!) when both of us can do a genuine thumbs up. Much Love and Light to you, hun.
oh o-type-o...i was meaning too bad we DO live so far away from each other...;)
